Setup Guide

The Verdict

The RG Cube XX is Anbernic's weird square-screen experiment. The 1:1 aspect ratio is perfect for vertical arcade games (Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, shmups) but awkward for everything else. At $60, it's the cheapest H700 device in the lineup. It can run N64, PSP (lighter titles), and DS like all H700 devices. If you love arcade games, this is a niche gem.

First Thing to Do

1. **Install muOS or MinUI** — Stock firmware is rough

2. **Get a MicroSD card** — Samsung EVO 64-128GB

3. **Load arcade ROMs** — This is what the square screen was made for

The Loadout

**Arcade (MAME):** RetroArch (Donkey Kong, Galaga, Pac-Man look perfect)

**N64:** Mupen64Plus (most games work)

**PSP:** PPSSPP (lighter titles)

**DS:** DraStic (most games)

**GBA:** gpSP (works, but letterboxed due to aspect ratio)

**SNES:** Snes9x (letterboxed, but playable)

**Genesis:** PicoDrive (same deal)

**PS1:** PCSX ReARMed (most games)

What It Crushes

**Vertical arcade games** — Donkey Kong, Galaga, shmups all perfect

**Neo Geo vertical fighters** — Some games look great here

What It Struggles With

**Everything designed for 4:3 or 16:9** — GBA, SNES, Genesis all have black bars

**PS1 3D games** — Same H700 limitations

Skip These

**PS2/GameCube** — Not possible

**RPGs** — You'll hate the aspect ratio for long sessions

Pro Tips

1. **This is for arcade purists mainly** — But it CAN do N64/PSP/DS

2. **No WiFi/Bluetooth** — This is bare-bones

3. **Cheapest H700 device** — Budget pick

Worth It?

Only if you're obsessed with vertical arcade games. The square screen is a novelty that wears off fast for traditional gaming. At $60, it's cheap, but you're better off spending $5 more on the RG35XX Plus for a normal aspect ratio.

Setup Tips

  • Unique 1:1 square screen (720x720)
  • Perfect for vertical arcade games
  • Install muOS or MinUI
  • N64, PSP, and DS work on this chip despite the odd screen

Watch Out For

  • !No WiFi or Bluetooth
  • !Square screen is divisive (great for arcade, letterboxed for everything else)
  • !Same H700 internals as other budget Anbernics
  • !No analog sticks
